Interestingly he uses the same technique to cope with returning home to London. When he is ready to start thinking about coming home, London is the city he longs for and where he needs to be to recharge. Again, he immerses himself in the life of the city and goes back to all the normal city life chores of supermarket shopping, travelling on public transport and surrounds himself with friends and family.
Most locations will need food and drink in the basic survival kit and there are other items that suit the activity such as a torch/flashlight when camping. This fabulous Explorer reminded us that we all carry a survival kit in a city too as when in London he has his Oyster card (public transport pass) and a smartphone with London transport apps and maps. He usually has a bottle of water too in case he's delayed on the Underground.
Of course, he is right. Wherever we go we go prepared with a small kit. It might be medicines and first aid on local family holidays or mosquito repellent in Southeast Asia. Maybe you have a trusty Swiss army knife so you can remove stones from horses' hooves or whatever it is all those wondrous tools actually do. So go on, share with us. What do you not leave home without?
