But I thought I'd give it a go recently and discovered how easy it is to make yogurt at home and that nothing fancy is needed at all. Plus, I like trying things that don't involve any shopping and instead make use of things I already have at home.
Here's what you need:
- live yogurt*
- Microwavable jug
- Thermos flask
* Live yogurt isn't hard to find as it's one of those products we're encouraged to have for "friendly bacteria". Danone Activitia is widely available but I found an obscure brand in a local discount supermarket that was much cheaper.
Step 1: Heat the milk in the microwave. So, pour some milk (full fat, semi-skimmed, skimmed - totally your choice) into a jug and pop it into the microwave. Heat for 2 minutes on high so the milk boils but don't let it boil over.
The science: The heating step is necessary to change the protein structure in the milk so it sets as a solid instead of separating.
Put the yogurt in the fridge as it tastes much nicer when cooled. And that's it! See, I told you it was easy.
